2016-17 League Cup quarterfinal will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday. The battle will be harder now. 6 Premier League teams and 2 Championship teams will fight for place in last 4. Here is a general preview of the quarterfinals.
Hull City vs Newcastle United:
Hull City’s form was dipped into rock bottom. They have won only one Premier League game in eleven outings. But they progressed well in the League Cup. On the other hand, Newcastle’s nine-game winning run in all competition ended surprisingly against struggling Blackburn. But, still the Magpies have the better chance to qualify. Hull will be looking for another good game in the Cup but Newcastle are well ahead of them, at this moment.
Liverpool vs Leeds:
Liverpool are out and out favourites for this League Cup tie. But Leeds are well capable of a surprise. The Reds were in rampant form, recently, but injuries of some of the key players are hampering their momentum. Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino all are injured at this moment. Leeds will want to take the advantage of that. Liverpool had to dig deep to win against Sunderland in the previous round. Leeds won fairly comfortable, but not so easily. It will be a good battle where Liverpool should progress.
Arsenal vs Southampton:
Arsenal have finally got a win against Bournemouth after successive draws. Southampton are in mixed kind of form. The Saints are ready to spoil the party and they have that capability. But, will Arsene Wenger really change the team in this tie? It is unclear whether Arsenal take this tournament seriously. They are in the Premier League title race and there are loads of games in the Christmas time period. So, players need rest. Will they be ready to sacrifice the tournament for resting the players? They had fielded young talents in previous rounds. Will they do it again? Plenty of questions are there and we can only get the answers as the time comes! Till then, it is advantage Arsenal.
Manchester United vs West Ham:
Manchester United and West Ham ended in a draw last Sunday. They will face in a rematch in the League Cup. Jose Mourinho’s men are not in the best form. West Ham have almost recovered the early season disaster. It will be an even contest. But the home side has better match winners who can turn it around at any time. And so, there is a good chance that the Red Devils will progress to the semi finals of the League Cup!
