After an unforeseen scoreless draw with Southampton at St. Mary’s, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are back to winning ways against relegation threatened Sunderland in front of the home fans.
David Moyes’ men were stubborn defensively and frustrated the Reds with ultra-defensive strategy. However, the home side managed a hard fought 2-0 victory and were back to the top of the league table temporarily, but they lost that position to Chelsea later yesterday.
The fixture was not a cakewalk for the Reds and the Black Cats kept on frustrating the attackers by lying deep into defense. To add to the annoyance, the in-form Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho was stretched off the field what apparently looked like a major ankle injury. Despite several goal-bound movements, Liverpool failed to break the deadlock and the first half ended scoreless.
The scenario did not change in the second half until 75 minutes when Divock Origi (came as a substitute for injured Coutinho) eased the pressure by his stunning strike from the right hand side of Black Cats defense. The win was confirmed around 90th minute mark when James Milner slotted from the spot after Sadio Mane was tripped down inside the box.
Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 11 league fixtures and the defeat has sent Sunderland at the bottom of the league table once again with Swansea City earning their first victory under new boss Bob Bradley in a thrilling 5-4 encounter against Crystal Palace.
