Jose Mourinho has called upon Henrikh Mkhitaryan to replicate his impressive display against Feyenoord in the Premier League.
The Armenian, a £26million summer signing from Borussia Dortmund, has endured a difficult first campaign in the English game but returned to Mourinho’s first team on Thursday as United thumped the Eredivisie leaders 4-0. The Armenian started just his second game for the Red Devils in their home against Feyenoord on Thursday night and was awarded man of the match for his performance.
There have been calls for the Armenian to start, with United 6th in the table, yet there have been proposals that he is not up to the physical level required in the English top flight.
Before the match, chief Jose Mourinho had said that he will give Mkhitaryan a chance in various matchday squads. The 27-year-old got one chance to substantiate himself at Thursday night, and he took his chances and made everything out of it.
Now while taking after Mkhitaryan’s fabulous display against the Dutch league leaders, Mourinho has challenged the Armenian to display the same in the Premier League.
“He just needs now to try to replicate this kind of performance in the Premier League. The Premier League is different. He needs one more step.” said Mourinho to the Manchester Evening News.
“Obviously now the confidence level is higher. This performance gives him the right to believe that he can play the next match.
“The Premier League has more physicality, more aggression. He needs a bit more of that. But, with the quality, we know why we bought him. He has a high level of technical quality. He’s very intelligent, very bright, with how he reads the game.”
Mkhitaryan will plan to win a place in United’s starting line-up when they go up against West Ham on Sunday. United drew their last two home against Arsenal and Burnley. And now victory on Saturday could see United close the gap to fifth-placed Tottenham to just two points.
