Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly monitoring the progress of Santos’ Thiago Maia but could miss out to PSG.

Thiago Maia is one of the most promising players available in the market right now. The exceptionally talented 19-year-old midfielder is being connected with moves to the best European sides. English Giants Chelsea and Manchester United were said to be interested in welcoming the player’s services last summer but now, according to reports by Calciomercato, PSG have hopped in front of the line to grab his signature.

The 20-year-old is currently contracted to Santos until 2019, but the club is under immense pressure to keep a tight hold of him. PSG are reportedly open to offer £17million to sign the talented midfielder in January. It is claimed their bid trumps the £8.5m offer Juventus were preparing for Maia. Manchester United and Chelsea are monitoring Maia’s progress but are yet to make a formal offer.

The youngster has also expressed his desire to move to PSG one day.

He said: “I have friends there. Marquinhos told me about the structure of the club.

“His smile let you imagine how happy he is there. If I went to PSG one day I would be very happy.

“But this does not mean that I will go there.”

However, Santos head coach Dorival Júnior is confident that the youngster will stay with Santos for more improvement and stability for his betterment.

He said: “There is a chance this boy will do well because he is a promising boy, who will surely have a very high development, he will be a top player in our country’s football. But he still needs a longer period of stability, and it will only be achieved if he has consistency.”

The 20-year-old has been touted as a hot prospect and helped the national team during the Olympics to win a gold medal for the first time. The ball-winning central midfielder entered the tournament at age 19 and was the second youngest player in the squad after Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus. Seeing his performances many critics has compared him with former Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Redondo because of his brilliant distribution abilities and defensive attributes. But should Maia arrive at PSG, Frenchman Blaise Matuidi’s time at the club could end as the midfielder has already moved down the pecking order at the club behind Rabiot and Veratti.
