According to Reports in Italy, Arsenal is weighing up a January swoop for Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes.

According to Italian website, Tuttomercatoweb, Wenger is looking to strengthen his midfield during the January transfer window and the name at the top of his list is Roma’s Leandro Paredes who has grabbed Wenger’s attention with a number of eye-catching performances since being recalled from his loan spell at Empoli. The midfielder spent the previous season on loan at Empoli making 33 appearances for the club and scoring twice.

The 22-year-old  has grabbed Wenger’s attention with a string of impressive displays for Roma this season since being recalled from his loan spell at Empoli. The midfielder has featured 16 times for Roma this campaign and Wenger reckons Paredes would provide good competition for places in the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.

The former Boca Juniors man is seen as one of Serie A’s hottest prospects currently who moved to the Serie A on loan with Chievo in January 2014 and then secured a permanent move to Roma for around £5 million in the 2015 summer transfer window. But the midfielder is under contract with Roma until 2019, which could prove to be a stumbling block for the Gunners.

Paredes is a holding midfielder who has excellent vision and a wide range of passes. With the likes of Francis Coquelin, Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny in the squad, Paredes’s inclusion could prove good competition and backup for them as Arsenal mount a title push. The Gunners have started the season well and currently fourth in the table, just two points off the leaders Liverpool.

The move additionally seems to end any chance Jack Wilshere had of coming back to Arsenal soon after his loan spell at Bournemouth.

Wilshere has conceded he is uncertain where he will play his football next season having fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal and the signing of Paredes would push him considerably even lower in that order.
