A late twist in the tale of Steven Gerrard and his return to Anfield.
The Liverpool and England legend was supposed to join his boyhood club after bidding adieu to MLS outfit LA Galaxy where he spent last 18 months of his football career. The 36 year old midfielder reportedly held productive talks with Liverpool and agreed to some substantial coaching role based on his vast experience amidst interests from others.
As per reports from BBC Sport and other sources, League One strugglers Milton Keynes Dons have held talks with Steven Gerrard over their vacant managerial role following the sack of Karl Robinson last month. MK Dons, currently 21st in the League table, are battling to avoid relegation.
The League One club, founded 12 years back, had some special memories in recent years. They have groomed Spurs midfielder Dele Alli who is being considered as next-gen English superstar. Also, they recorded a massive 4-0 victory over Manchester United a couple of years back in a League Cup fixture. Dons earned a promotion to the Championship, i.e. second tier of English football, under the guidance of their former boss Robinson. However, they failed to stay above the relegation zone and are back in League One once again.
Following the sack of Robinson, club chairman Pete Winkelman shared his ambition with the Buckinghamshire side: “We’re a young football club and we want to play football like the big boys play. We might not play it at the same speed or accuracy but I want our supporters to recognize that football.”
Gerrard, however, has not announced his retirement from football and it is still unknown whether he will join them as a player-manager. He is currently working on his UEFA A coaching license – the second-highest qualification offered. At this stage, the Dons are talking to a number of options, and Steven Gerrard is one of them.
Previously, they made high-profile appointments in form of Roberto di Matteo and Paul Ince. It is now to be seen whether the Anfield legend accepts the offer in order to experience a new challenge in his career.
