The current Everton manager Ronald Koeman has catalyzed the controversies by claiming that their city (Merseyside) rivals Liverpool can win the premier league this season as the Dutchman revealed that the reds have proved their potentials already in the premier league so far this season.
Speaking to the reporters the manager has said, “It’s still too early to say who will be the favorites but I have been impressed by Liverpool so far.”
The Reds are currently holding the top position with one point clear to the second placed West London side Chelsea, while their city rivals Everton have managed to secure the seventh position with eight points adrift from the top spot.
The former Barcelona player knows very well that the Everton fans will not like to hear the predictions he has stated. “Maybe that is not what you might expect the Everton manager to say, but they have been playing some very good football and deserve to be at the top. They have goals in their team and this is what all successful sides need”, he added.
Previously Koeman’s side had have their fixtures against the others premier league contenders Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Chelsea earlier this season. In the first two schedules, he has managed to secure 1-1 draws. But in the third fixture, his side have been humiliated with a 5-0 result at the Bridge to the former Champions. With this form, the two Merseyside rivals will lock their horns on 19th December in Koeman’s first ever Merseyside Derby. With all odds, the former Southamptom manager has put Liverpool ahead of all the other contenders. “My Everton team has played Manchester City and Chelsea in the last few weeks and both were very impressive. We managed to draw at City, but you could see the quality of these teams”, mentioned the Dutchman.
The Everton manager has also denied to rule out Manchester United from the title race despite their horrible form under Jose Mourinho this season. “United have a new manager and they will improve in what is an unpredictable Premier League season. People expect someone like this with such a big record to win games instantly, but it is not so easy. Of course they can come back because they have some top players and a very good manager”, he added.
Koeman finished the interview after speaking about his own club and revealed the long term project for the European spot. “The ambition this season will be challenging for European football. We have introduced some new players last summer and it takes time to find the right balance in the team and to find consistency, but I feel it is not far away”, the Dutchman clarified.
