Premier League is set to resume next weekend following one week of absence due to international break. Plenty of stars left their clubs to attend national duties and many of them have been equally impressive for their country.
We have shortlisted five Premier League stars who have guided their country to grab crucial victories in order to qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup.
5. Dimitri Payet:
The Frenchman had a masterly Premier League debut with West Ham United and influenced the Hammers to finish seventh in the league. However, Payet missed a few games due to injury and West Ham had a miserable start in 2016-17 campaign. Since his return to full fitness, he scored a wonder goal against Middlesbrough and the Hammers are slowly turning things around.
France were a goal down against Sweden in their World Cup qualifier before Payet inspired them to earn a hard fought victory. Paul Pogba headed the equalizer from his free-kick and he himself scored the winner a few minutes later.
4. Adam Lallana:
The Three Lions are in a turmoil since that bizarre event of Sam Allardyce’s departure as England boss and the England U21 manager Gareth Southgate is currently appointed in a temporary role. However, after a monotonous scoreless draw against Slovenia, the Englishmen have found their feet defeating fierce rivals Scotland by a thumping 3-0 margin. Adam Lallana, arguably the most improved Liverpool player since Jurgen Klopp’s appointment, scored a stunning header to score the second goal of the game and was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ for his majestic display.
3. Christian Eriksen:
The Spurs midfielder has been a consistent performer for his club and country. The Denmark number 10 guided his nation to seize an easy 4-1 victory over Kazakhstan by scoring two goals – first one was a spot-kick; the second one was a stunning solo effort to finish things off.
2. Victor Moses:
Moses, despite being exiled for past three Premier League campaigns, has been a key figure in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation and helped the Blues to get back in title race. And now, the Nigerian international scored a brace against Algeria in World Cup qualifiers to earn a crucial 3-1 victory.
1. Philippe Coutinho:
Probably the most discussed name during this international break, the Brazilian’s stellar performance (with a trademark goal) against arch-rivals Argentina in a thumping 3-0 victory has caught the eyes of Spanish giants (both Real Madrid and Barcelona) and has been a major talking point before winter transfer window. The Brazilian, however, is enjoying his football with Liverpool and dreams of winning Premier League and Champions League for them. As per Brazilian outlet ZERO HORA, in a discussion Coutinho replied to Marcelo’s question if he’d like to join Real one day:
“Klopp gives me confidence, I feel home”
Special Mention: Dutchman Memphis Depay, the forgotten Manchester United winger, scored a brace including a stunning free-kick against minnows Luxembourg and earned a hard-fought 1-3 victory for his country.
