Alex Oxlade Chamberlain has been a player who was signed for Arsenal as a young 17 year old from Southampton in 2011. Since then he has developed into a decent player but still there is something that tells he hasn’t delivered his full potential yet.
Lack of consistency, injury problems, mentality and sometimes squad superiority has been a hindrance for the development of Oxlade Chamberlain. But Arsene Wenger still rates his youngster highly and believes that the England International has a lot to give in the coming days for both club and country.
The Arsenal boss recently spoke to Arsenal’s official website and gave his thoughts about the stint of Oxlade Chamberlain so far.
On his early years at Arsenal…
“My experience shows that it is good sometimes to be positive and patient. I was very patient with him at the start – it is important sometimes to hold them back a little bit. When he was younger opponents pushed him off the ball too easily. But he built up his strength and endurance, and that is important at the top level of course.”
Chamberlain was outstanding on his first season at The Emirates. His raw pace, passing ability and skills took the league to a storm and he helped Arsenal to secure a 3rd place that season.
On his strengths…
“He gives us pace, power and penetration. When you look at Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, it is difficult to find what he has not got.”
Arsene also said that maybe Chamberlain doesn’t know his potentials yet and that is an important thing for him. The boss revealed that he will allow the player to choose his most preferable position in the coming days. According to the Arsenal manager, Chamberlain remains focused and works hard in training, but he sometimes becomes upset and loses self belief because he is too critical about himself. The midfielder needs to balance it and get his mental co-ordination right between self criticism and not harming confidence.
On the season ahead…
“It’s a very important season for him. He was out for a long, long time last year. He didn’t go to the European Championships with England like he should have done if he was fit. So we have to be cautious, and get him through to the start of this season because it is very important for him.”
The England International has already made a better start this season. He hasn’t been in the starting eleven always, but he has utilized the chances he has got. Alex already has scored 5 times in 15 appearances this season so far, the same he managed to score in 70 appearances in the last two seasons.
So the manager’s vision with the player still has enough time to be materialized. Being just 23, Alex has time to check all his flaws and improve to a much better player in the coming days. With Arsenal ready to go hard for the Premier League this season, Oxlade Chamberlain will undoubtedly play a pivotal part in the season.
