Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti will be out for three weeks with a left thigh injury. The injury happened during a training session with France ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Sweden on Friday. The extent of the knock will also see him miss a friendly against Ivory Coast on Nov. 15.
The Spanish Club revealed on Thursday that medical tests have shown that defender has ruptured a muscle in his left thigh. The young defender was quickly replaced in the French squad by another La Liga defender Eliaquim Mangala.
A club statement reported, “First team player Samuel Umtiti has a rupture to the femoral biceps muscle of his left thigh. This was determined following tests carried out on Thursday. The injury is expected to keep him out for approximately three weeks.”
The youngster has made a fine start to his life for the Spanish giants as the summer signing has played ten matches since arriving this season, playing 90 minutes every time but once.
The Frenchman has suffered his second injury since his move to Barcelona this summer. He had injured his knee during training ahead of Barcelona’s game against Atletico Madrid and was out of action for total three weeks in the months of September and October.
As well as the two national matches, the defender will miss club games against Malaga, Celtic, Real Sociedad and Hercules. If he recovers within the anticipated time, he could play the El Clasico against Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Dec. 3.
Barca have been battling for fit players in defense lately, with Jeremy Mathieu, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba all are sidelined with injuries, leaving only Umtiti and Javier Mascherano as the only available centre backs. But now with Umtiti’s injury, Lucho has only one fit defender left in the squad.
However, Pique, who hasn’t joined up with the Spain squad this week, is back in training and focusing a return against Malaga next week.
