Lucas Perez : Strength, Weakness and Impact

The last days of the transfer deadline day this season for the Arsenal fans have been just the way they have been demanding for years now, yes, spending some money.

And Arsene Wenger has finally fulfilled their wish by splashing a whopping 52 million pounds for two players, Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez. Being an established international, Mustafi is well known. But the Gooners of various parts are still doubtful about Lucas Perez and the impact he may have this season for the club.

Well the Spanish striker has joined Arsenal from his boyhood club Deportivo La Coruna and Arsene Wenger has high hopes on him. Arsenal had to pay 17.1 million pounds in order to secure the services of the 28-year-old forward. Some Arsenal fans questioned this transfer and termed as a “panic buy”, but Wenger dismissed those remarks and said that Lucas was in his radar. But one thing for sure is that life in England won’t be as sunny as Spain. He will have to adapt to the game quickly and there lies the biggest challenge. Being a 28 year old, he may find it tough to adapt to the physicality and the intense of the game rapidly.

The strength of Lucas is the defense splitting runs he makes and his pace can be handy for Arsenal. Also he has the attributes of a good link up player who can also give goal scoring passes,so that may handy for the likes of Walcott and Sanchez. His pace, run behind the centre backs can be utilized by Arsenal for good cause, and being Ozil , Cazorla, Ramsey in the team and also the long balls from Xhaka as we saw against Watford, can really cause havocs for the opponents. Lucas scored 17 goals in the La Liga last season, so, in terms of form, he is in the form of his life.

But the things that may trouble Lucas is his body strength and the physicality of the Premier League. Even on his debut, he looked a bit too weak against the tall and powerful defensive duo of Southampton. His aerial ability and the hold up play have to be improved for better results. He has, in total, played a handful of minutes as an Arsenal player and maybe a bit more time on the pitch will help him to rectify his deficiencies. Arsenal’s style of play demands a far more rapid and silky smooth movement, so it may not be a bad idea if he spends some time on the gym and melts his extra pounds that he has. Mental fatigue will also be a factor as games in England are far more frequent than Spain (For Example: Christmas and New Year period), so he has to cope with that as well.

He may not be what the Arsenal fans wanted at the first place, but if he adapts properly and adjusts his game in some areas, Arsene Wenger may get a good value of his money. His form is sky high, his attributes are pretty decent. The places where he lacks is the adaptability to the English football. But the story of Vardy is vivid, he took Leicester to the pinnacle last season. So with the players Arsenal have along with Lucas, Arsenal fans can hope for a decent outcome. And after this dream move, even Lucas can say to himself – “ Si , si  puedo” (Yes, yes I can )
