And now, there are even more reasons to rejoice, for Gurpreet has got the unique opportunity to captain a European side and he is indeed the first ever Indian to achieve this rare feat.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu previously played for Pailan Arrows and East Bengal. And he was the first Indian male goalkeeper to step a foot on European soil for playing in a top league. His stint with the Norwegian association football club Stabaek FC started in 2014. He has also become a regular starter for the national side and has always lived up to the potential. In an earlier interview with Sports-nova, the custodian talked about his inspirations, future goals, dreams and many other stuff.

Later, we got the chance to talk to Gurpreet to know how he was feeling. He admitted that the responsibilities that naturally come with being the skipper of the team certainly put some pressure on anyone. But, he also thinks that it helps and inspires one to perform well. According to him, “I can only see benefiting from it (and) I have never seen a person who gets affected by getting to captain a team.”
Gurpreet hasn’t yet been able to establish himself as the first choice goalkeeper for the first team. But, now that he has been handed the responsibilities to captain the reserve side, there certainly is a ray of hope for him. Confidently he said, “I am ready for the first team. It’s just a matter of time when I get my break. It needs more time and patience, specially when you’re a goalkeeper.”
We also wanted to know whether he would like to see himself as the captain of the Indian national team. And the answer came at once, with a glitter of hope and excitement, “Yes, why not? It will be a great opportunity.”
But, the goalkeeper did not reveal what his plans or thoughts will be if he becomes the captain. On a lighter mood, he said, “Well, it depends on what decisions or say I will get to make if i am given such a choice.”
After the news broke out, there were certainly a lot of enthusiasm and appreciations from the fans and supporters, most of them being from India. We requested Gurpreet to leave some comments for all his well-wishers out there. And here is what he said:
“I think believing in what you’re doing is most important and you cannot rest once you’re in it. Make sure your decisions are good (and) you’re getting good advice!”
Let’s wish Gurpreet Singh Sandhu all the luck and hope he would soon achieve more.
