Five major talking points ahead of Premier League gameweek 29

With only a quarter of the season to go, the battle for the silverware has become immensely interesting in the Premier League. And naturally, gameweek 29 has much to offer. After the weekend, the teams will be busy in the European competitions and in the FA Cup. So, this gameweek, in a way, is going to shape the future of the teams in other tournaments as well, for a win will easily uplift the morale of the team.

Here are the five major talking points before gameweek 29.

The north London derby:

One of the most enthralling affairs in the British football is going to return, as the gameweek 29 is ready to kick off with the north London derby. This time, it will be even more interesting since Tottenham and Arsenal are now at the second and the third position of the league table, respectively. However, a win for the Gunners will help them secure 54 points, same as their rivals. On the other hand, should Spurs win, they will take a six point lead over Arsenal and will edge further ahead in the title race. Certainly a worth-watching fixture, don’t you think?

Can Guus Hiddink continue his unbeaten run?

Guus Hiddink has not yet suffered a defeat in the league and there is little chance that he will taste it this weekend. Chelsea will be up against Stoke City at the Stamford Bridge. While it should be another victory for the Blues, they should not take Stoke lightly as they have won three matches on the trot. Moreover, Jack Butland has been one of the best goalkeepers of the season and the Chelsea attackers will find it hard to get past him.

An enchanting battle for a European spot:

While Leicester City, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City have maintained their top four spots for quite some time now, the other team are not resting on their laurels. Manchester United have already managed to get 47 points, same as their city rivals. West Ham are closely behind, only a point adrift of the Manchester clubs. And then, there are Stoke City and Liverpool, 4 and 5 points behind Stoke, respectively. This battle for a European spot is going to be more exciting after gameweek 29, as Stoke and West Ham have difficult fixtures against Chelsea and Everton while City, United and Liverpool will enjoy easier games this weekend.

Norwich, Sunderland or Newcastle – who’s going to stay?

The relegation battle has become as interesting as the title challenge in the British top tier. With Aston Villa reeling at the bottom with only 16 points, these three teams are just above them, all having 24 points to their names. The Villans are naturally expected to relegate to the Championship. However, any of these three teams can eventually save their spot in the Premier League. This weekend, Sunderland have a tough fixture against Southampton. But, Norwich (18th with 24 points) are up against Swansea (16th with 30 points) while Newcastle (19th with 24 points) will welcome Bournemouth (15th with 32 points). A win for the Canaries or the Magpies will surely make this relegation battle even more enthralling.

Red hot United aiming for fifth consecutive victory:

Louis Van Gaal’s men have shown some resilience in recent past, winning all of their last four games and scoring 12 goals in them. Gameweek 29 will close off with Manchester United’s testing trip to the Hawthorns. West Brom have got 7 points from their last three games. Only last week, they drew away against the table toppers, Leicester City. Naturally, this is going to be a really difficult fixture for the Red Devils. Moreover, Manchester United have been really inconsistent against the weaker teams in the league this season and so, a slip up by the favourites can never be ruled out. All in all, the showdown promises to be a mouthwatering clash.
