The winter transfer window is about to open and teams around Europe have already started searching for proper options to overcome their deficiencies.
Borussia MonchenGladbach midfielder Havard Nordtveit (who played for Arsenal youth ranks in the past) is rumored to be in demand by several outlets both in England and Germany. He is being monitored by Arsenal and Everton and a bid is being prepared from both of the sides. Though Monchengladbach are keen to offer him a new deal to keep him with them, as his current contract expires at the end of the season.
Arsenal are currently on top of the Premier League table with 39 points after completion of half of the season. They were the only club among the top five European leagues who did not buy any outfield player during summer transfer window. They already have enough options in their squad but injury has been a curse for Arsene Wenger’s side for seasons one after another.
The major setback was the injury of Francis Coquelin who arguably started as the best defensive midfielder of Premier League this season. He is out with a long term knee injury and not expected to return until March. Mikel Arteta, the veteran defensive midfielder, is also out with an injury and badly running out of form. Santi Cazorla, the versatile Spanish midfielder, was playing in a deep central midfield role, but the curse of injury hit him too. He is out for at least two more months. Arsenal is now left with Mathieu Flamini only, whose consistency has been an issue in past. So the club is desperately in search for a central defensive midfielder in the upcoming winter transfer window.
Everton are also lacking depth in their midfield. The defense is not being screened properly and they are conceding way too many goals. Gareth Barry will turn 35 in February and he is still their most consistent defensive midfielder. Muhamed Besic has not settled well so far and James McCarthy has injured himself once again while playing against Stoke City. So Nordtveit is a realistic target for them as well.
Reports are claiming that Arsenal have already roped in the £5 million Mohamed El Nenny deal who plays for FC Basel as a defensive midfielder. But that has not cooled down the Nordtveit rumor as El Nenny, the Egyptian international is still young and not enough experienced. On the other hand Nordtveit has established himself in a top Bundesliga side and has been consistent through out. Considering his contract situations, he might be available in Winter for a cut-price deal which could turn out to be the bargain of the window.
