Despite a bright display from United that showed sparks of come-back, Thierry Henry believes that Van Gaal’s job is still on the line.
According to former Arsenal star, an improved performance against Chelsea might not save Van Gaal’s job at Manchester United. He feels that perhaps it is now too late for the Dutchman to produce some miracles as the Manchester United board could sack Van Gaal anytime soon.
The Old Trafford side have now played eight games without a win, their first since 1990. Under Van Gaal, they have produced a record number of 0-0 draws, which was quite rare in Ferguson’s tenure. Monday’s 0-0 draw against the Blues add to the tally.
Though the Red Devils can claim that they had been unlucky, twice denied by the woodwork. But, Henry thinks that Chelsea have allowed Manchester United the comfort to keep the ball and build their attacks. It was more Chelsea’s mistakes than United’s brilliance that led to the impression that Van Gaal is getting things back on track – that’s what Henry told on Sky Sports.
Van Gaal thinks that the board will stick with him but Henry doubts that. As per his opinion, the veteran coach is just one or two failures away from landing on the same page as Jose Mourinho.
The 1998 World Cup winner has blamed Van Gaal’s inability to find a stable team setup for Manchester United’s recent slump.
Does he know his squad? Does he know who he wants to play? At times they are a bit too rigid, too predictable, it’s not the Manchester United I know.
Henry is also not happy with the way Van Gaal used Anthony Martial, one who was dubbed the new ‘Thierry Henry’ after his blockbuster transfer.
They were looking for goals and pace, and they got that in Anthony Martial. He scored goals, and then suddenly he’s on the left, another day on the right.
Two other players in United lineup who had to play in various different roles in this season are Daley Blind and Ashley Young.
Ashley Young one day is left winger, then right back, then left back. [Marcos] Rojo starts, then suddenly he doesn’t start for a month, and then he comes back.
Daley Blind is the guy, and then suddenly he’s not the guy anymore. I think he doesn’t know his team, he doesn’t trust guys yet.
