Premier League gameweek 18 : Goal of the week

0

Boxing day matches are always exciting and this year has been no exception. There have been many surprises this week. And luckily for the viewers, we got to see a few extraordinary goals. However, it has only increased the difficulty to choose the goal of the week.

23 goals were scored on the Boxing Day. Stoke City started the day with an emphatic 2-0 win over Manchester United. High-scoring matches were Chelsea vs Watford (2-2), Manchester City vs Sunderland (4-1) and Southampton vs Arsenal (4-0). The Saints were especially brilliant and humiliated Arsene Wenger’s men at home.

Here are the top four nominations for the goal of the week.

Marco Arnautovic (Stoke City), vs Manchester United:

This winger has almost made it a habit to score wonderful goals. This was his fourth goal in last four matches. The goal was a result of a Bojan free-kick. The former Barcelona player took the strike that hit the Manchester United wall and fell on to Arnautovic. The Stoke talisman took a stride to the right and moments later, a thunderous strike rocketed past a hapless David de Gea.

Yaya Toure (Manchester City), vs Sunderland:

Manchester City’s most dependable midfielder was at his best once again. This was the second City goal. Toure fooled the defenders with a quick change of feet and then smashed a low, left-footed effort. The ball easily defeated Mannone and found the back of the net.

Tom Carroll (Tottenham), vs Norwich:

Tottenham won it 3-0 against newly promoted Norwich City and consolidated their position in the top four of the table. The last goal for Spurs was a screamer from Tom Carroll. The midfielder was given too much room to shoot just outside the box. He grabbed the opportunity and smashed the ball home into the bottom corner.

Cuco Martina (Southamton), vs Arsenal:

Southampton scored their first of the four through their right back Cuco Martina. Bertrand floated a cross to the Arsenal box from the left but it could only find Mertesacker. However, the clearance was poor and it bounced straight to Martina. He took a thumping volley with the outside of his right foot and found the back of the net. Not only it is a nomination for the goal of the week, but it can also be nominated for the goal of the season.

In our opinion, Martina’s wonder strike was the best of the lot. What’s your pick for the goal of the week? Let us know in the comments below.
