Man Utd lost to a newly promoted side again as Norwich won at the Old Trafford courtesy of goals from Cameron Jerome and Alexander Tettey, while Anthony Martial grabbed a consolation for the home team.
The pressure on Louis van Gaal is piling up as United lost to another newly promoted side, just after their defeat to Bournemouth last weekend. Cameron Jerome scored one and set up another for Alexander Tettey as Norwich claimed three valuable points which pushed them up to 16th place.
United made a promising start to game, with Wayne Rooney returning to first team action after recovering from an injury, which also marked his 500th appearance for the Red Devils. However they were left stunned by Norwich who grabbed a lead just before the break through Cameron Jerome.
Alexander Tettey doubled the lead just after the break while Golden Boy Anthony Martial’s solo effort gave United hopes of a comeback. However Alex Neil’s side held on to grab a historical win at the Old Trafford, their second away win in the 20 away games they have played in top flight.
United’s winless run extends to 6 matches in all competitions as back to back defeats to newly promoted sides Bournemouth and Norwich puts van Gaal under further scrutiny, and also increasing up the rumours of a move for Jose Mourinho who was recently sacked by Chelsea.
United started strongly with Rooney’s 11 minute strike being cancelled for offside. Memphis Depay failed to finish a Wayne Rooney cross, as United kept on attacking but Norwich’s defence held firm and kept the opposition strikers at bay.
Norwich slowly came into the game with time and grabbed the lead seven minutes before the break. Nathan Redmond poked a ball past Phil Jones for Cameron Jerome, who pounced at the opportunity and executed a calm finish past de Gea.
All hopes of a Manchester United comeback were extinguished when Norwich doubled their lead ten minutes into the second half. Norwich claimed back possession through Tettey near the centre line and Cameron Jerome played a fine pass to Tettey who poked home with his toe to add to the misery of United.
United finally scored when Rooney’s flicked header fell kindly in front of Martial who made no mistake as he fired high a finish past the Norwich keeper Declan Rudd.
Declan Rudd stayed alert as he saved a good attempt from Juan Mata from a freekick, while Chris Smalling playing as a makeshift striker in the last few minutes of the game put an effort wide in injury time. Norwich survived some tense last moments to pull off a superb win, while Manchester United’s title challenge suffered another setback as drop to the fifth position in the league, 9 points behind league leaders Leicester City.
