Van Gaal not happy with Schweinsteiger, the midfielder talks about the team’s problem

Manchester United lost their last Champions League group match against VFS Wolfsburg and as a consequence, they could not proceed to the next round. It was undoubtedly a terrible display from the players and Louis Van Gaal had to take the blames for this. The boss was also unhappy with the players’ performances. In particular, during a press conference, he said that he was not happy with the way Bastian Schweinsteiger played.

Manchester United bought Schweinsteiger last summer. It was surprising that they chose the 31-year-old midfielder over younger ones. The German, however, was happy to sign a new deal. He won everything for Bayern Munich and wanted to take a new challenge. It took him only a few days to consolidate his position in the starting lineup. So far, his performances were commendable. But, during the last match against Wolfsburg, Schweinsteiger could not produce an inspiring display and Van Gaal had to substitute him in the second half.

After the match, the coach said that the midfielder’s performance was not his best. Van Gaal also pointed out that he was banking on Schweinsteiger before the game. He thought that with the vast Champions League and Bundesliga experiences, Bastian will be the best man to guide United through to the knockout stages. But, the Bundesliga opponents defeated United comfortably and send them out to the Europa League.

Incidentally, Bastian Schweinsteiger was having a great time only one week ago. He was the scorer against Leicester City. After going behind from a Jamie Vardy goal, the German midfielder scored his first United goal to draw level. It was a scorching header from a Daley Blind corner. He was also behind the winner against Watford. It was an own goal from Troy Deeney that helped Manchester United win that day. However, it was Schweinsteiger genius that was behind that own goal. Obviously, there is nothing to deny that the midfielder has been an integral part of the team.

And so, it has raised quite some eyebrows when Van Gaal talked about Schweinsteiger after only one bad outing. But what does the player think about his team’s disastrous performances? Only a few days ago, he had spoken about this. People think that Rooney and co are fumbling in front of the goal and that is the reason they cannot convert the horde of chances they are creating. But, Schweinsteiger denied this claim right away. He is sure that his teammates never suffer from psychological problems when chances come to them.

“Players are not scared in front of goal, no,” he said. “It is all about the killer instinct. We have players who have the abilities but we need [to show] it in every game.”

“If you miss a chance you have to be unhappy. When you are a big striker, [like] Ronaldo, Messi and Thomas Muller, it is about attitude. They want to score goals. They have quality but they want to score goals. You need the attitude that you want to score,” he further added.

The former Bayern Munich player also said that only the forwards should not be blamed for this. He explained,  “The problem is a mix of everything, it is that last pass. You have to look up to see what is on. We have players who can score goals. It is also about how we start the game from the back. It is about the first pass. It is everything.”

Nevertheless, the German and his team are having a difficult time. Let’s hope that they will be able to get rid of it and will be able to bring back the glorious days the club can always boast of.
