It was another unimpressive performance from Louis Van Gaal’s men. Only a few days ago, the boss said that the chance of having a successful European campaign this season is not on their cards. And precisely that is what happened in the Wolfsburg vs Manchester United clash.
Early in the third minute, an inexperienced Varela almost cost United a goal. Andre Schurrle had an amazing opportunity but he could not capitalize on it. Manchester United, however, did not do the same mistake. Anthony Martial gave them a welcome lead at the 10th minute. He kept his calm and put the ball beyond goalkeeper’s reach.
The match soon turned interesting when Naldo equalized for the home team only two minutes after the Martial goal. United defense were not at all good and they were exposed repeatedly. Still, Fellaini got a chance to score but his header was saved from the line. And soon after, a brilliant movement from the home team saw Vierinha score. Wolfsburg were leading 2-1 thirty minutes into the game. The score remained the same at the break. However, there were some drama towards the end of the half. Lingard curled the ball into the net but it was ruled offside by the linesman. On the other hand, Darmian was limped off the ground and 18-year-old Borthwick-Jackson came in place of him.
The second half saw a bit different and inspired Manchester United. They kept on attacking repeatedly. But a determined Benaglio kept them at bay. The Wolfsburg goalkeeper made a lot of saves to stop his team from going behind. Towards the other end, De Gea also made back to back two stunning saves at the 63rd and the 67th minute, both time denying Schurrle. He followed it up with another extraordinary save off Arnold. That span of Woflsburg attack ended with Kruse going inches wide.
Finally, an own goal from Wolfsburg defender helped Manchester equalize the score. With eight minutes to go, Fellaini’s header met Guilavogui and he unfortunately headed the ball to his own net. But again, the joy did not last for long. Naldo once again scored right after the United goal and put them into the lead.
The match ended 3-2 and thereby ended Manchester United’s Champions League run of this season. The German side topped the group and went through to the second round.
