Just like every other week, Premier League brought many surprises and some goals. And as always, it’s almost impossible to choose the best goal of the week.
In terms of the numbers, this week was probably not the best of the lot. We have seen only twenty goals to be scored this week. In the curtain-raiser of the week, Marko Arnautovic scored a brace to help Stoke City win 2-0 against Manchester City. This loss cost the visitors heavily. They dropped down to the third position in the table. Leicester City capitalized on their defeat. Their talisman Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick against Swansea and took his team to the zenith. Among others, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool dropped points in spite of being the favorites.
Now, to choose the best goal of the week, let us take a look at four of the quality goals that were scored this week.
Joel Campbell (Arsenal), vs Sunderland, 5 December, 2015:
This was the first goal of the match. And it was that man again – Mesut Ozil. The goal may not be considered of the best quality ever, but the through Ozil sent was surely of top notch. The German midfielder fooled two defenders and sent a ball to Campbell, who came from behind the last defender and put it calmly beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.
Take a look at that awesome pass in the following video, from 0:55 minutes.
Riyad Mahrez (Leicester), vs Swansea City, 5 December, 2015:
The midfielder scored a hat-trick in this match. His first one was a defensive error from Swansea while the second one was probably a wrong decision from the linesman. However, he perfected it during the last goal. To be precise, it was his team who perfected it.
Kante, one of the best defensive midfielders of the season, made a great run from the center and then passed the ball to Jamie Vardy. The forward then unselfishly pushed it to the right. Mahrez was already there to send it home, thereby completing his hat-trick. No wonder both Kante and Mahrez made it to our Team of the Week. Watch the goal below, from 1:05 minutes of the video.
Marko Arnautovic (Stoke), vs Manchester City, 5 December, 2015:
The midfielder was at his best against a much stronger side. He scored two goals to help his team win this important fixture. However, both the goals were the result of ingenuity from Xherdan Shaqiri, a £12 million capture from Inter Milan. The Swiss winger showed his true worth in this match. His well-crafted passes met Arnautovic and he scored.
Although both the goals were of the highest quality, the second one will be included in our list of Goal of the Week. In the midfield, Shaqiri made a fool of Fernando with his sublime skill. He then took a touch and sent an extraordinary through to the final third. It was directly into the path of Arnautovic. The winger did no mistake from 12-yards and put it past the goalkeeper. Naturally, this goal will be in our list of goal of the week. Take a look at the following video, from 0:56 minutes to the end.
Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle) vs Liverpool, 6 December, 2015:
This left winger was the nemesis of Liverpool. The first goal Liverpool conceded was an own goal from Martin Skrtel. But, it was his shot which the defender tried to save, only to put it in his own net. Wijnaldum then scored the second goal of the match to seal it for the Magpies.
Similar to the previous two, it was another example of excellent team goal. Sissoko took the ball in the right flank and ran towards the opponent box. Eventually an awesome pass found Wijnaldum who had to chip it gently over an onrushing Mignolet. This may be the goal of the week for some people. Watch the following video from 6:24 to take a look at the goal.
With these brilliant passes and some calm finishing, it is definitely difficult to pick one favorite. Still, in my opinion, the award for Goal of the Week should go to the combination of Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri.
