Jose Mourinho went all out in the summer to buy John Stones but all the credit goes to Roberto Martinez for holding him up at the Everton. Now, reportedly, Arsene Wenger has also entered the list of admirers for the 21 year old English defender.
The Toffees’ central back has been regarded as one of the country’s best promising talents by pundits and he is surely going to be a vital member for Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2016 squad. This shining emergence of a young defender didn’t go unnoticed by Wenger and he, perhaps, has found the “quality”, he is always looking for.
Arsenal, actually, don’t have plenty of options for that particular center-back position. Laurent Koscielny is certainly one of the best in this business but 31 year old Per Mertasacker has, recently, found it difficult to match the pace of the English football. Last winter, Wenger spent 11.2 Million Euros to bring in Gabriel but the Brazilian is still learning tricks to adapt to the conditions.
In this scenario, a Premier League regular like John Stones can just provide the right kind of partnership for Koscielny at Arsenal’s back. Stones was bought in 2013 from Barnsley for just £3 Million and Roberto Martinez will not sell him at any price under £30 Million.
On top of that, there’s another catch – the Everton boss is really not willing to let the defender go at a moment when his team is doing well to push for an Europa League berth. The other problem for Wenger is his all-time problem Jose Mourinho. Now, according to the Frenchman’s reputation, he will not surely go for overpriced transfers. But, with a pressure from Chelsea rising high, Wenger may have to splash a bit more to get this job done.
