All you need to know about David Beckham’s UNICEF Charity Match


Manchester United legend David Beckham returns to Old Trafford! He and a horde of great footballers are going to take a part in a charity match there. Here are the What, Who and When of the match.

What is it?

Beckham has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the world aid organization UNICEF, which provides aid to children across 190 countries around the globe. This year, to mark Beckham’s 10th year with the organization, they have launched a new project “7 : The David Beckham UNICEF fund”. This match is an initiative of that project. Money raised through ticket sales and matchday donations made on matchday will help the organisation’s provide care including protection, health and nutrition.

Who will play?

This match will be played between Great Britain and Ireland XI versus Rest of the World XI. Beckham will captain the first team and he has got Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt; members of the famous “class of 92” in his team. In addition, Premier League legends John Terry, Ashley Cole and David James will also be there. The coach? It’s none other than Sir Alex Ferguson!

On the other hand, Rest of the World XI, captained by Zinedine Zidane, consists of plenty of extraordinary stars. Former Real Madrid and Barcelona legends Luis Figo, Ronaldinho, Clarence Seedorf will grace the pitch today. Beckham’s LA Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan also flew from the United States to play for this team. Zidane and co will be coached by Carlo Ancelotti.

At Manchester United‘s home ground Old Trafford, the two teams will kick off at 3pm GMT (9:30pm IST) on Saturday 14 November. Tickets to the match have been sold out. Regarding TV broadcasting, it may not be telecast live but highlights will be shown on Match of the Day on BBC1 on Saturday evening (GMT).
