MICHU : The Greatest One Season Wonder of Premier League

Miguel Perez Cuesta, aka Michu, cost Swansea £2 million only. His move from Rayo Vallecano was one the greatest transfer deals in the history of football. Once a nightmare to the opponents, Michu is finding it hard to play football at top levels anymore. Thus it might be the end to one of the greatest one season wonders of Premier League.

The 29-year-old was linked with a £30m ($46m) move to Liverpool or Arsenal just two years ago, following an impressive Premier League debut campaign. However, he has since struggled with both form and injuries and has his future very much in limbo as he might be trying his luck in the 4th division football.

Michu tried to revive his career under Rafa Benitez at Napoli after injury prone second season at Swansea, but he failed due to his injuries again. Only five appearances for the Serie A giants and Swansea decided to part their way after the completion of the loan spell as manager Garry Monk has no place for him in his plans.

A year after winning the League Cup and finishing ninth, the Swans were poised to push on and challenge the likes of Spurs and Everton and Liverpool for a top-six spot. Michu was the reason Swansea won the only silverware that they had won. Even if his 22 goal season was fluke, he would have remained as a great entertainer and giant killer in the EPL. But ankle injuries and two surgeries took that chance away from him.

Take a look at some of his best goals and skills here:

Unfortunately, Michu didn’t do much other than score. Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard perfected the deep poacher position, but were also very complete attacking midfielders. He didn’t help at all in the way of ball retention or creativity, but at times did not ran too. Michu didn’t really care to do that, he combined all the standing around of Juan Roman Riquelme with the great passing skill set, and that was before he got hurt. He was a nightmare for Arsenal and United. He scored last minute winners against both the teams. We will miss his celebration too.

It might be tempting to be sad for Michu and the wonder what might have been, but for the matter of the fact – He is now plain bad, that’s how Napoli fans described him. Hopefully this is not the end for Michu and we hope to see more from him. But despite of whatever happens, it was always good to see him score and he will remain as the best ONE SEASON WONDER of Premier League.
