Squad Update: Memphis Depay Dropped From The Dutch Team

Time is not going too well for Memphis Depay. His performance for Manchester United is under question and on the top of that, he has been dropped from the national side as the Dutch are set to play against Germany and Wales after failing to qualify Euro 2016.

The Dutch coach Danny Blind has defended his decision by questioning Depay’s ability to work as a team-man. He clearly pointed out,”In football, you must function in a team. He doesn’t always do that.”

“He should have talked about that with us.” he added as Depay refused to talk about the failure to qualify for Euro in front of the media.

“I think Depay is a player for the future, but there are other issues to look at. Perhaps Louis van Gaal has also said something. Of the last five games, he has been in the team at United just once.”, the Oranje boss added.

Despite of his huge reputation, Depay has been a bust at club level which might have affected his performance for the national side too. Robin Van Persie has also been dropped from the side after his horrible performance for both national side and club.

Memphis Depay made his £30 million move from PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United in summer 2015. Despite interests from French giants Paris Saint-Germain, Van Gaal sealed this transfer well ahead of time. The Dutch winger was allotted the no. 7 shirt to carry on the legacy of Ronaldo, Beckham and Cantona.

The 21 year old attacker did not really live up to the expectations of the Old Trafford faithfuls. Depay impressed during the World Cup at Brazil but did not replicate that form into Premier League so far. It is still early to say but this costly signing already looks like a marriage that’s never going to last.
