Here, on his birthday, we have compiled a list of 15 best quotes from Navjot Singh Sidhu. Read, enjoy and keep sharing!
1. On Kaluwitharana’s slow batting rate.
Ramesh Kaluwitharana was indeed a good opening batsman and with Sanath Jayasuriya, he often troubled opponent bowlers. But, once when he was batting at a slow rate, Sidhu compared him to an Indian auto-rickshaw.
“He is like Indian three-wheeler which will suck a lot of diesel but cannot go beyond 30!”
2. Arguing with Martin Crowe over the nature of wickets.
This comparison was above everything else!
“Wickets are like wives – you never know which way they will turn”.
3. On Sourav Ganguly’s poor fielding.
Former Indian skipper was often criticized for his poor fielding skills. But, Sidhu took it to another level when he compared Ganguly to something only he could have thought.
“Ganguly moves so slowly on the field like Jack of Jack and Jill who goes to fetch a pail of runs for the opposition.”
4. On India’s home advantage.
For long, Indian cricket team were thought to be sort of invincible on home soil, mainly due to the spinning tracks and the strength of the spin bowling attack India always had. In order to explain this, Sidhu said,
“If you are trying to beat India in their home, then you are trying to get milk out of an ox”.
5. On Deep Dasgupta.
Sidhu never hesitated to make fun of other cricketers whenever he had a chance. Here is what he had to say about former Indian keeper, Deep Dasgupta.
“Deep Dasgupta is as confused as a child is in a topless bar.”
6. On a missed catch.
‘Catches win matches.’ But, how would you explain the effect of a dropped catch? Well, Sidhu, as usual, knows the perfect way to explain this.
“The ball slipped from his hands like butter from hot paratha.”
7. When Ganguly ran Rahul Dravid out.
Here is another Sidhu quote on Sourav Ganguly. Once, Ganguly was responsible for running Rahul Dravid out and everyone knew that it would be a turning point of the match. And Sidhu said,
“Ganguly has thrown a drowning man both ends of the rope.”
8. On an out-of-form batsman.
“He looks as uncomfortable as a bum on a porcupine.”
Did you ever imagine what that would feel like?
9. During an India-New Zealand match.
This was an epic quote, that Sidhu made to Martin Crowe.
“The Indians are going to beat the Kiwis. Let me tell you, my friend, that the kiwi is the only bird in the whole world which does not have wings!
Criticizing Team India.
There have been a few instances when India were not performing well and Sidhu took no time to compare the Indian team to all sorts of things. Here are three such quotes.
10. “India looks like a crippled cobra whose fangs are clipped.”
11. “The way Indian wickets are falling reminds of the cycle stand of Rajendra Talkies in Patiala . . . One falls and everything falls.”
12. “There is light at the end of the tunnel for India, but it’s that of an oncoming train which will run them over.”
On Third umpires.
Well, Navjot Singh Sidhu is not a man to keep quiet when he sees that the umpires are giving wrong decisions. Here are a couple of his gems on this issue. First one is after Eddie Nichols gave a wrong decision and the second one was a general comment on third umpires.
13. “Eddie Nichols is a man who cannot find his own buttocks with his two hands.”
14. “The third umpires should be changed as often as nappies and for the same reason.”
On Sachin Tendulkar.
And finally, Sidhu have always had huge respect for the Little Master and here is what he said when Sachin was not playing in a match.
15. “Indian team without Sachin is like giving a kiss without a squeeze.”
