At 6:00am this morning, the Donbass Arena, home of Shakhtar Donetsk, was hit by two explosions. The Ukrainian Premiere League Club has confirmed damages of the southwestern facade of the stadium and the detached building of the Energy Centre in the northern part of the arena due to the shelling. No casualty was reported.
The city of Donetsk, in Eastern Ukraine, is part of the larger Donetsk province, where Donetsk People’s Republic forces have stepped up shelling over the past week. The rebel stronghold has also increased in street battles in recent days, as Ukrainian forces struggle to gain ground over separatists in the region.
Sports Nova has no information about the probable reason for the attack, or whether the stadium was targeted specifically. The region has already been suffering from political instabilities. Shaktar Donetsk is not one of the three Ukrainian clubs to have registered with the Russian Football Union.
Shaktar Donetsk, the champions of the Ukrainian Premiere League last season, will compete in the UEFA Champions League, which begins in September this year.
