CFL: Mariners held on to slender lead to get 3 points in their CFL opener

Following a debacle from their arch rivals yesterday, Mcdowell Mohun Bagan held their nerves to get full points in their first match in this year’s Calcutta Football League. New signing Jeje Lalpekhlua made no mistake to convert a penalty kick on 43rd minute, a goal that eventually became decider here at Yuvabharati Krirangan in Saltlake, Kolkata .

With Subhas Bhowmick and Subrata Bhattacharya as rival coaches, it was believed to be game of strategies and tactics. But to fans’ distress the match started lazy and safe with Subhas Bhowmick relying on possession football to test the opponent.

Midway through the first half the game gained pace and flair, shots from both sides went off target.

On 42nd minute Jeje was fouled inside the box by Sk Azim, who was booked right away, the India international took advantage to score his 70th goal in India and gave his coach a lead he was looking for .

Second half saw Subrata Bhattacharya trying to make things difficult for Yusa Katsumi by blocking the midfield. On 55th minute Koko unleashed a shot which Shilton was able to save, Mohun Bagan on the other hand also created their chances but Sabeeth and debutant Balwant , who came as a substitute, both missing their chances .

Apart from a yellow card on 84th minute to Souvik Ghosh everything went smooth for the green and maroons under their new coach. They will play their next match against Police A.C. on Sunday.
