It was an exciting Premier League weekend. There were some inspiring performances from teams like Sunderland, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal while Leicester City and Manchester City’s title run took a jolt against other contenders. We also saw as many as 34 goals scored in the ten matches, certainly an unusual phenomena in the top flight. And now, while we prepare for Champions League nights and an FA Cup weekend, let us take a look at the team of the week from gameweek 26.
Splendid performances from a lot of players have made it hard for us to choose the best eleven. We are going to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, this time. But, it must be mentioned that for every position, there were other candidates who had terrific outings and could have got a chance too.
This was possibly one of the easiest picks. There were only three teams – Southampton, West Bromwich and Liverpool – who could hold on to clean sheets this week. On the other hand, Vito Mannone and Heurelho Gomes were instrumental in their teams’ win against Manchester United and Crystal Palace, respectively. Considering the circumstances, we have chosen Ben Foster in our team of the week. It is important to remember that he played for the first time this season only four gameweeks ago. And now, he maintained a clean sheet against the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and Arouna Kone. With five important saves against Everton, this West Brom goalkeeper is going to be our reliable hands between the sticks.
Southampton duo Virgil Van Dijk and Jose Fonte have continued to perform and have got their sixth consecutive clean sheet in the Premier League. On the other hand, Sunderland defender Lamine Kone scored an important winner against Manchester United and was brilliant in his usual role. However, his partner, former Manchester United player John O’Shea showed his class and was in an outstanding form. While all four deserved a chance, we have decided to go with Van Dijk and O’Shea in our team. Among others, Kolo Toure and Daley Blind performed well.
In the right back position, our pick is going to be Nathaniel Clyne. The Liverpool side back was extraordinary. He also got his name in the score sheet in his team’s thumping 6-0 victory over Aston Villa. For the other flank, although Cesar Azpilicueta played well, we had a standout performer in Danny Rose. He combined very well with the attackers, defended brilliantly and also had a hand in Tottenham’s first goal.
N’Golo Kante is getting better with every passing day. Although Leicester City lost against Arsenal, Kante’s display was more than magnificent. For the other defensive midfield position in our team of the week, we are going with Moussa Dembele. The Tottenham player’s passing was brilliant. With 92.5% passing accuracy, six tackles, two interceptions and two clearances, he deserves a chance in the best eleven.
This was the most difficult position to make our mind. Plenty of attacking midfielders shined this week. Sunderland winger Wahbi Khazri scored an important goal in his team’s surprise win over Manchester United. Stoke City duo Affelay and Shaqiri were brilliant right from the start. One of the best midfielders this season, Dimitri Payet was extraordinary against Norwich. After the Canaries took a 2-0 lead, Payet scored one and assisted another to bring his team back on track. Chelsea powered over Newcastle and Willian and Pedro were the main architects there.
On Sunday, in Liverpool’s thrashing of Aston Villa, James Milner and Philippe Coutinho performed well. And in the last game of the gameweek, Christian Eriksen scored a goal and had a decent outing against Manchester City.
You can clearly understand how difficult it is to choose the top three. Nonetheless, for the central role in the attacking midfield, we are going with Payet, mainly because of the impact he had in the game. And for the two wingers’ positions, we cannot but choose the two Chelsea men. Both Willian and Pedro scored and they were always busy and creating chances. It is hard to leave the others out, but in the end, we have to go with the best eleven and here it is.
This was rather easy. Diego Costa was in a good touch, but he was substituted early in the game after the team took an unassailable lead. Among others, Joselu, Martial, Adebayor, Rondon, Long, Sturridge scored and played well. But, Troy Deeney was way better than all of them. The Watford captain scored a brace and helped his team win 2-1 against Crystal Palace.
